Prescription and Repeat Prescription Request Policy:

From February, some long‑term medicines in New Zealand can be prescribed for up to 12 months at a time. This makes it easier for many people to get their regular medicines without needing frequent GP visits.

However, not all medicines are safe to prescribe for a full year. Some require regular blood tests, dose adjustments, or close monitoring to keep you safe.

What You Can Expect:

Your prescriber will:

  •  Explain why a shorter prescription is needed
  •  Arrange any required blood tests
  •  Review your medicines regularly
  •  Work with you to keep your treatment safe and effective.
Medication Review Consultations:

Due to the increased duration of prescriptions, you will be required to book a face-to-face Medication Review Consultation with your GP. Should you require the GP to review other health concerns, you will need to book a separate consultation with the GP. The GP will not have the required time to discuss other health issues during the Medication Review consultation.

Medication Prescriptions:

Patients which have seen the doctor for a Medication Review Consultation between 1 November 2025 and 31 January 2026, can request a repeat prescription for 3 months, but will be required to see the doctor for their Medication Review Consultation at six months.
